Understanding U-values can be confusing, but at Mike Martin Window Systems, we take them very seriously. We work with a number of trusted manufacturers to guarantee that low U-values are achieved. When it comes to planning a building development project, the last thing you want is to get bogged down in the complexities of choosing and designing the right window system. That’s where MMW steps in. We take the hassle out of selecting the perfect energy efficient windows for your project, ensuring you can focus on what you do best — building or designing the perfect home.
Understanding U-values: The key to energy efficiency
Let’s face it, U-values might seem like a pretty dull subject, but they are absolutely crucial when it comes to insulating your home with the most appropriate materials. So, what exactly is a U-value in the context of doors and windows?
Thermal transmittance, or U-value, is the rate of heat transfer through a structure. This can be a single material or a composite, and it’s measured in W/m²K. Essentially, it indicates how much heat flows through an area of 1m² at a constant temperature difference of 1K (or 1°C) between the warm and cold sides of the structure. The better insulated a structure is, the lower its U-value will be.
Both the glass and the frame are taken into consideration when calculating a product’s constructed U-value, whether it’s upvc, or aluminium. At Mike Martin Window Systems, we offer a range of U-values from 1.4 down to ‘Passive House’ compatible products with a low U-value of 0.7.
The comfort factor
While a U-value as low as 0.7 sounds impressive, the additional energy saved can be minimal. The key benefits lie in comfort and their durable build qualities. If your home’s walls, roof, and floor are well-insulated but the glazing is ignored, you risk creating cold spots around your windows at night. This can lead to draughts, heat loss, and potential condensation issues.
Choosing the right U-value for your project
Selecting the appropriate U-value for your project involves considering the overall energy efficiency of the home and the specific features of the doors and windows. For a period property with little or no wall insulation, a U-value of 1.4 or 1.2 will be appropriate, as the overall heat loss from the property can only be countered so far with energy-efficient windows. On the other hand, fitting 0.7 U-value windows in a standard new build project will cost up to 50% more but will only reduce overall house heat loss by around 5%.
